Our Story

Catering by Uptown is committed to supporting its clients, employees and the community during these turbulent and unprecedented times. As a family business, with expertise in weddings and special events, it has stood as a pillar in the hospitality industry for nearly 40 years. Today, it continues to stand with the community as a conduit to resources and hope.

When the pandemic first rocked the nation, the company’s founding members—the Goyena and Pereira families—recognized that their hospitality services could be put to immediate use to help people facing food shortages in the Baltimore and DC communities.

They quickly launched 1000Meals.org to provide healthy meals and to assist community groups in need of food by connecting to those with resources and with teams that could supplement its efforts.  Within 10 days of its start, more than 10,000 meals were provided to community organizations that served the most vulnerable populations.  As the need grew, so did the families’ resolve to continue to help combat food scarcity. Their company’s top chef and director of operations, Chris Cherry and community relations director, Karen Lynne Eure Wilson corralled their resources and talents to lead this ongoing philanthropic initiative.

The need for food remains as does the invitation for individuals and organizations to help bring nutritious meals to the tables of those who are hungry.
